Listen & Learn

According to Tom Peters (Thriving on Chaos), if you want to increase your performance and enhance your career, you must listen!

Listening is a key factor in understanding and influencing other people, increasing your knowledge, and learning new information.

Listening can have a tremendous impact on success in your personal and professional life!

Listening Is Hard Work!

To really listen you've got to concentrate. You must focus on what the other person is saying! You must suspend your own thoughts, ideas and your internal dialogue.

This is difficult! Yet to be effective, you must suspend your own inner voice, your inner conversations and your habit of planning to respond to what the other person is saying - while they are speaking!

To do this successfully, ask yourself the following questions:

bulletWhat is the person saying?
bulletWhat do they mean?
bulletWhat is their point?
bulletAm I getting the whole story?
bulletWhat else/ what other information can they give me?
bulletWhat do they want from me?
bulletDo I really understand what they are saying?

Listening not only involves hearing with your ears, it also involves listening with your eyes and other instruments of your senses.

bulletCan you notice any changes in voice quality?
bulletHas the person's torso changed in any significant ways?
bulletIs the person's use of their hands or legs attached to any     specific  issue or emotion?
bulletWhat facial expressions do you notice?

Caution:

While you may notice significant aspects of the persons body language, be careful not to interpret or give meaning to what you notice! For example, if the person says "Yes" while shaking their head signifying "No", do not determine that the individual is lying!
